Childwold has an interesting history. In 1878, Mr. Addison Child of Boston purchased land which is the present location of Childwold. He built the first log cabin which was later added on to and is still present on the site. The first baby was born in 1880 and the Post Office built in 1884. The year 1889 saw the first hotel built on Massawepie Lake and it was named the Childwold Park Hotel. Childwold Station was established on the shores of Pitchfork Pond in 1890, due to John Hurd's Northern Adiorndack Railroad routing through Tupper Lake. In 1891 a road was cut through the virgin wilderness along the shores of many small lakes from Childwold Park Hotel to Childwold Station, a distance of eight miles. The Hotel ended it's last season in 1909 and the first automobile motored through Childwold in 1910*.
