ABOUT US

The Raquette River corridor is environmentally, socially, economically, and culturally rich.  Recognizing its diverse assets, many people within the 174-mile long river corridor are caring for the land and water resources in the river corridor and promoting the river corridor for its many benefits.  The partners represent a wide range of stakeholders – towns and villages, conservation and environmental groups, businesses and economic development organizations, museums, historic and cultural organizations, schools and universities, outdoor and recreation groups, lake associations and friends groups, government agencies, and more.

This collaborative effort emerged from the dreams of a few people to revitalize the river corridor.  People in the Town of Colton reached out to neighbors along the river and folks in Tupper Lake and elsewhere joined in.  Since 2002 public meetings have been held to hear ideas and

develop a vision.  A recommendation to recognize the river as a small boat and paddling route – known as a Blueway – resulted in the development of a Blueway Plan completed with financial support from the New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources.

Contemporary Adirondack singer-songwriter Jamie Savage (http://www.jamiesavage.com) who lives in Piercefield has written a song about the river and given it to the partnership to inspire others.  In his song “Mountain Blood” he calls the river “a partner in our lives, player in our dreams.”

Blueway activities are being coordinated through the following committees with an Executive Committee providing leadership for the overall effort.

§         Governance & Coordination

§         Marketing & Promotion

§         Stewardship, Education & Access

§         Grant & Contract Management

Minutes of meetings and other updates are posted under the ‘Blueway News’ webpage to keep the network of partners and other interested people informed about committee deliberations and decisions as well as activities and projects underway.
